Ever thought that classic, melt-in-the-mouth Viennese whirls couldn’t be improved upon? There’s a very good chance these chocolate-dipped versions, sandwiched with morello cherry jam and luscious buttercream, will change your mind.

  • 250g (8oz) unsalted butter, softened
  • 50g (2oz) icing sugar, sifted
  • 250g (8oz) plain flour, sifted
  • 60g (2 1/2oz) cornflour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 200g (7oz) dark chocolate, broken into pieces
  • For the filling
  • 100g (3 1/2oz) unsalted butter, softened
  • 200g (7oz) icing sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
