National Apple Betty Day

National Apple Betty Day

The National Apple Betty Day is dedicated to Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s favorite dessert. Apple Betty is a variation of a traditional American dessert called Brown Betty.

Brown Betty is a type of a crust-free pie which is made from fruit or berries and sweetened crumbs. When it is made from apples, it is called Apple Brown Betty or simply Apple Betty. This dessert is typically served with whipped cream, ice cream, or lemon sauce.

To celebrate the National Apple Betty day, try your hand at cooking this delicious treat. Place 1 1/2 cup soft bread cubes without crusts into a buttered shallow baking dish. Mix 1 1/2 cup cubes with 2 tbs melted butter and set aside.

Spread 3 cups thin apple slices over the bread cubes in the dish. The apples must be peeled before slicing. Stir together 1 cup caster sugar, 1/2 cup water, 5 tbs melted butter, 3 tbs lemon juice, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg, and grated rind of 1 lemon until sugar is dissolved.

Pour evenly over the apples and top with the bread cubes mixed with butter. Bake in the oven at 375 °F for about 40 minutes until the bread is browned and the apples are tender. If the bread is browning too quickly, cover it with a foil sheet. Apple Betty can be served either warm or cold.
