National Cherry Turnover Day

National Cherry Turnover Day

The National Cherry Turnover Day is celebrated on August 28. This is a perfect occasion to indulge yourself with delicious pastry which can be either bought at your favorite bakery or homemade.

A turnover is a type of pastry typically made with a puff pastry, shortcrust pastry or kneaded yeast pastry dough. It is made by placing a filling, which can be sweet or savory, on a piece of dough, folding the dough over, and sealing it. Turnovers usually (but not necessarily) have a triangular shape.

Sweet turnovers can be eaten for breakfast or as a dessert. They can be filled with any fruit or berries. Cherry turnovers are one of the most popular types of turnovers. They are usually made with puff pastry dough filled with a gooey cherry filling. Some recipes call for additional ingredients.

To celebrate the National Cherry Turnover Day, try your hand at baking cherry turnovers at home. You will need 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry. Thaw the dough and roll out on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into quarters.

In a bowl, mix 12 ounces frozen cherries, 3 tbs all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1 tbs lemon juice. Mound filling on one side of each piece of dough leaving a border, fold other side over filling, and seal edges. Cut several slits in the top of each turnover. Bake at 375 °F until puffed and golden.
