I have never heard of fig newtons so I had to look them up to get this recipe for you to try out , The reason being that today is National Fig Newton Day so I wanted to find a recipe for you to try out for yourselves because of this

Many homemade Fig Newton recipes include orange juice with the filling, but if you try a Newton, you’ll find the orange flavor in with the cake. To get that same flavor, my Newton dough has a bit of orange zest and a splash of juice too.

 

INGREDIENTS

  • For the Dough:
  • 8 ounces all purpose flour
  • 4 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 1/2 ounces sugar
  • 1 ounce honey or corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • For the Filling:
  • 12 ounces dried black Mission figs
  • 2 ounces unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 1/2 ounces honey or corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
