August 22 is the National Eat a Peach Day in the United States. This date was chosen because peaches are harvested between June and August.

Peaches are native to Northwest China. Nowadays they are cultivated in many countries, but China still is the world’s largest producer of peaches. Top ten peach and nectarine producers also include Italy, Spain, USA, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Chile, France, and Argentina.

The free largest producing states in the U.S. are Georgia, California, and South Carolina. Georgia is even called the Peach State because it is considered a center for growers and consumers of peaches in the United States.

Peaches contain vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and zinc. A medium peach typically contains 8% of the daily value for vitamin C. Peaches also contain sugars and dietary fiber.

To celebrate the National Eat a Peach Day, munch on a fresh juicy peach or cook any dessert that includes peaches. Peaches are used in pies, tarts, and other pastries, fruit salads, jams, cobblers. If you do not feel like cooking, just scoop some vanilla ice cream and top it with peach slices. Peach milkshake is also a perfect treat for this food holiday.
