What better way than to have traditional crumpets for tea time with butter, jam or even grill with cheese on the top. I love them, so when I came across this recipe, I just had to share it with you as there is nothing like fresh home-made food.
A fantastic recipe to try out as you can make these crumpets any time of the day like breakfast or tea time. This is a great treat to share when family or friends come over. These mouthwatering hot crumpets with lots of butter that melts through the holes are yummy!
Ingredients for Traditional Crumpets
12 fluid ounce semi-skimmed milk, warm
1 pound all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons dried yeast
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
12 fluid ounce warm water, approximately
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
vegetable oil for cooking
How to Make Traditional Crumpets
In a bowl, mix flour, yeast, and sugar and then add milk while whisking until well combined. Gradually add the water while stirring continuously until you form a thick and smooth batter. You may not use all water if the batter already has thick cream consistency. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave for 1-2 hours in a warm place until foaming.
Combine salt and baking powder and then add in the batter, mix well. Heat a heavy-based frying pan and grease by damping a kitchen towel with the vegetable oil. Grease 3″x 1 “pastry rings too before putting in the frying pan.
Pour batter in the pastry rings. Cook for about 5 minutes until you see tiny holes, and the crumpet is setting. Flip the crumpet and cook for another 2-3 minutes. If you notice batter seeps under the ring, add more flour because it is too thin. Add more water if it’s too thick, and you do not see tiny holes on the surface.
Repeat the process for the rest of the batter. Completely cool the crumpets on a wire rack. Before serving, reheat the crumpets in a toaster or grill and spread lots of butter or jam.
