This magic custard cake shares a similar flavor to a dutch baby/german pancake to me – with a pillowy and light cake top and a thick and creamy custard center (but of course, this cake is much thicker and more dense than a pancake). The cake is very easy to make, and the batter is liquidy and easy to mix. Don’t worry if the batter feels way too liquidy to you – it’s supposed to be that way.

from White on Rice Couple1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter
2 cups (480ml) milk
4 eggs, separated into whites and yolks
4 drops white vinegar
1 1/4 cups (150g) confectioner’s sugar
1 Tablespoon (15ml) water
1 cup (115g) all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
extra confectioner’s sugar for dusting
freshly whipped cream or fruit for serving (optional)
