I love apple crumble recipes so when I found this one I just had to share it with you

 

When it comes to using up apples, apple crumble is your best friend. You can use just about any kind of apple  a crisp and tart apple work better than sweeter varieties…. try Empire, Granny Smith or Honey Crisp… or mix all three!, and there is no fussy pie crust to deal with

Ingredients

Filling

3 large apples, peeled, coarsely chopped (about 3 cups)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 to 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 cup cold butter or margarine, cut into small pieces

Topping

1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ oatmeal cookie mix
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup chopped pecans

 

 

Expert TipsServe with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Use fresh peaches for the apples for a juicy peach crumble.

Empire

A cross between the Red Delicious and the McIntosh apple.

Good all-purpose apple, but ideal for eating fresh. Crisp and juicy with a sweet-tart flavor.

Available September through July

 

 

Granny Smith

All purpose variety with a crisp texture and tartflavor.

Season: Year Round

One of my favorite recipes…

Granny Smith Apple Salsa:

  • 1 pound Granny Smith apples, diced
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon minced jalapeño peppers
  • Sprinkling of Splenda or sugar

Mix all ingredients together and serve over grilled chicken or fish.

 

 

Honeycrisp

Crispy and juicy with a mild, sweet honey flavor.

Cross between a Macoun and a Honeygold apple.

Use for eating and cooking. Stores well.
